Fourteen Giants

There are fourteen mountains in the world over 8,000 meters in height.

They have become known as the Fourteen Giants.


#1 | Everest | 8848 meters | Nepal/Tibet

  • First ascent in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.


#2 | K2 | 8611 meters | Pakistan/China

  • First ascent in 1954 by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.

  • Nicknamed "Death Mountain".


#3 | Kangchenjunga | 8586 meters | India/Nepal

  • First ascent in 1955 by George Band, Joe Brown, Norman Hardie, and Tony Streather.


#4 | Lhotse | 8516 meters | Nepal/Tibet

  • First ascent in 1956 by Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss.


#5 | Makalu | 8463 meters | Nepal/Tibet

  • First ascent in 1955 by Jean Couzy, Lionel Terray, Jean Franco, Guido Magnone, and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa.


#6 | Cho Oyu | 8201 meters | Nepal/Tibet

  • First ascent in 1954 by Herbert Tichy, Sepp Jochler, and Pasang Dawa Lama.


#7 | Dhaulagiri | 8167 meters | Nepal

  • First ascent in 1960 by Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, Albin Schelbert, Nawang Dorje Sherpa, Nima Dorje Sherpa, Michel Vaucher, and Hugo Weber.


#8 | Manaslu | 8163 meters | Nepal

  • First ascent in 1956 by Toshio Imanishi, Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa, Minoru Higeta, and Kilchiro Kato.


#9 | Nanga Parbat | 8125 meters | Pakistan

  • First ascent in 1953 by Hermann Buhl.


#10 | Annapurna | 8091 meters | Nepal

  • First ascent in 1950 by Louis Lachenal and Maurice Herzog.

  • A very dangerous and difficult mountain to climb. The north face is avalanche prone and the south and northwest faces are very difficult.

  • As of 12/31/99, fewer people have climbed Annapurna than any of the other Fourteen Giants.

  • The first 8000er climbed.

  • First ascent in 1958 by Andy Kauffman, Pete Schoening, and Roch Arete.


#12 | Broad Peak | 8047 meters | Pakistan/China

  • First ascent in 1957 by Hermann Bhul, Kurt Diemberger, Marcus Schmuck and Fritz Wintersteller.


#13 | Gasherbrum II | 8035 meters | Pakistan/China

  • First ascent in 1956 by Sepp Larch, Fritz Moravec, and Hans Willenpart.


#14 | Shishapangma | 8027 meters | Tibet

  • Chen San, Cheng Tianliang, Doje, Mima Zaxi, Sodnam Doje, Wang Fuzhou, Wu Zongyue, Xu Jing, Yungden, and Zhang Junyan.
